HO Scale Railway Layout: Sunshine Station in the Late 1950s

The Project

When Harry Cassio set out to build a highly detailed HO scale model railway layout depicting Sunshine Railway Station and its surrounding area as it appeared in the late 1950s, he realised that certain elements of the layout would need specialist help to bring to life. The project is a personal one, built from a deep connection to the area and a collection of photographs inherited from his father.

Most of the buildings and infrastructure were built by hand from raw materials, a technique known in the modelling world as scratch building. It is a painstaking process that rewards patience and skill, but certain components, particularly railway crossing gates and pedestrian bridge railings, require a level of precision and repeatability that hand building alone could not deliver.

The Challenge

Harry faced a practical decision: purchase equipment, work through the considerable learning curve that comes with 3D design software, and tackle it independently, or bring in a manufacturing partner who could work from basic drafting input and handle the complexity from there.

The Solution

Harry engaged Formero to design and 3D print the components requiring fine detail and dimensional consistency at HO scale. Working from his initial drafting input, the Formero team assisted with the CAD work, translating his designs into print-ready files and maintaining clear communication throughout.

The components were produced using Figure 4 DLP technology with Tough 60C White material. The high resolution of the Figure 4 platform made it well suited to the fine geometry involved, and the white finish provided an ideal base for painting and finishing to match the period detail of the surrounding layout.

The Results

Two years into construction, the layout continues to take shape as a personal tribute to a specific place and era. The 3D printed components sit seamlessly alongside the hand-built structures, contributing to a layout that reflects both the character of the original subject and the standard that serious modelling demands.

The project remains a private endeavour for now, though Harry notes that it may change over time.
