What Is Metal Stamping?

Processes Involved in Metal Stamping
The process of creating a custom metal prototype through metal stamping involves several steps, including:
- Stamping: This is a cold-forming method that is used to shape and transform flat metal blanks into various forms, shapes, and sizes. The stamping process uses a tool and die, which changes its form when in contact with the metal sheet due to the pressure exerted.
- Bending: With press brakes, rolling machines, and other relevant equipment, metals are manipulated to create basic shapes such as U-bends or V-bends.
- Punching: This process involves creating holes in a metal surface using a punch and die. It is often made with hard metal and used to perforate holes into metal sheets simply by exerting force.
- Welding: This can be achieved using several methods including stick welding, MIG, and TIG. Welding doesn’t always have to be used and is only necessary if a metal part is made up of two separate metal components. Once these separate parts are joined together, they can be finished using several post-processing methods, such as powder coating, anodising, and bead blasting. These methods will give the welded part a more refined finish.
