MSLA Materials Explained: Which Resin Suits Your Application

Masked stereolithography (MSLA) is prized for its fine detail, smooth finish, and fast turnaround. But the process is only half the story. The resin you choose has just as much influence on how a part performs as the printer itself.
Formero runs a wide range of MSLA resins in-house, from general-purpose prototyping through to flame-retardant, high-temperature, and static-dissipative materials. Picking the right one from the outset saves time, rework, and the risk of a part failing in service.
Why Material Choice Matters as Much as the Process
A prototype destined for a snap fit test needs a completely different resin to one being used as a heat-resistant jig, even if both come off the same printer using the same process. Getting this right at the design stage avoids a common and costly problem: a part that looks perfect but fails the moment it’s put under real load, heat, or repeated flexing.
The General Purpose Range: Clear, Grey, White, and Black V5

These four resins share nearly identical mechanical properties. Tensile strength sits between 60 and 62 MPa, flexural strength is consistent at 103 MPa, and impact resistance is similar across all four. The difference comes down to colour and finish, not performance.
Clear V5 produces highly transparent, colour-neutral parts that can be polished to near optical transparency. It suits fluidic devices, lighting prototypes, transparent enclosures, and consumer bottle and container prototyping.
Grey V5 is a rich, matte general purpose resin with a surface finish that rivals injection moulding. It suits form and fit prototyping, presentation models, and jigs and fixtures.
White V5 offers the same balance of accuracy and finish in a bright white, a strong option for anatomical models and presentation pieces needing a clean, neutral colour.
Black V5 rounds out the range with a deep, matte black, presentation-ready finish, well suited to enclosures, housings, and models where black is a design requirement.
If none of these properties decide it for you, the choice usually comes down to what colour suits the final application.
The Performance Range: Built for a Specific Job

Beyond the general purpose colours, six resins are engineered for specific mechanical or environmental demands.
Tough 1500 V2 is one of the most resilient materials in the range, with strength, stiffness, and toughness comparable to polypropylene. Its elongation at break of 155% means it tolerates significant flex before failing, while still holding stiffness above the other flexible options. It’s also certified biocompatible. Typical uses include rugged enclosures with self-tapping screw bosses and snap fits, compliant mechanisms like latches and dampers, and impact resistant jigs for long term factory use.
Durable is the most impact resistant resin in the range, recording 114 J/m on the notched Izod test, roughly four times the general purpose colours. That toughness comes with lower tensile strength (28 MPa): built to survive a knock or drop, not a steady pulling force. It suits squeezable prototypes, low friction surfaces, and impact resistant jigs.
Flexible 80A is the most rubber-like material in the range, with an 80A Shore hardness simulating rubber or TPU. It’s also the only flexible resin produced clear, worth knowing if visibility matters. With 120% elongation at break, it suits handles, grips, overmoulds, seals, gaskets, and masks.
High Temp stands apart on heat resistance, with a heat deflection temperature of 238°C at 0.45 MPa, the highest in the range. Its low elongation at break (2.3%) makes it rigid and precise rather than flexible, suited to hot air, gas, and fluid flow applications, heat resistant mounts, and mould inserts.
Flame Retardant is certified to UL94 V-0, self-extinguishing and halogen-free with favourable flame, smoke, and toxicity ratings. It suits jigs and fixtures near high temperatures or ignition sources, interior components in aircraft, vehicles, and rail, and protective housings for electronics.
ESD is a static-dissipative resin built for electronics manufacturing, protecting sensitive components from static build-up while repelling dust and holding up under daily production use. It suits tooling and jigs on an electronics line, anti-static prototypes, and component handling trays.
The Challenge of Stocking a Full Material Range In-House
Most businesses running their own 3D printer work with a single machine and a single resin loaded at a time. Switching material means swapping out the tank and cleaning the build plate, straightforward enough for one change, but stocking ten resins in-house also means storing ten different bottles correctly, tracking shelf life, and tying up capital in materials that might sit unused for months between jobs. Multiply that across ten resins with genuinely different properties, and it stops making sense for most in-house setups.
